American Rivers’ Statement on Flash Flooding in New Mexico
Flash flooding in the New Mexican community of Ruidoso has killed at least 3 people and has left significant damage to homes and property in its wake. According to reporting in the state, the floodwaters rose five feet higher than previous record levels.
Emily Wolf, Rio Grande Coordinator for American Rivers and a New Mexico resident, made the following statement:
“We are facing the reality that extreme weather is exerting significant pressure on our rivers and river communities. We must be making policy decisions that acknowledge this. I am heartbroken for the lives lost here in New Mexico, and across the Southwest with the floods in Texas.”
“The toll from these floods is devastating and communities need support from local, state and federal leaders. As the rebuilding process begins, we have to be planning for the future.”
