Tom Kiernan, President of American Rivers, released the following statement today in response to the Senate’s confirmation of Michael Regan as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency:
“Michael Regan is a champion for clean water, climate solutions and environmental justice, and we applaud his confirmation as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. He is an excellent choice for this agency that is so critical to our clean water and the health, safety and well-being of communities nationwide.”
“His track record prioritizing science and equity makes him an excellent choice to address the challenges facing our rivers and communities. In his leadership role at the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, he prioritized climate resilience and environmental justice, highlighting how Black, Indigenous, people of color and low-income communities are disproportionately impacted by pollution, flooding and other threats.”
“Healthy rivers are part of the solution to the biggest challenges facing our country, including climate change, the economy, public health and racial injustice. We encourage Administrator Regan to prioritize investment in water infrastructure including natural infrastructure solutions, advance a science-based approach to protecting water resources, and ensure that environmental justice is centered in decision making for the agency. We look forward to working with Administrator Regan and the EPA to ensure protection of clean water and healthy rivers is a top priority.”
