Senator Merkley rafts the Molalla River with American Rivers and the Mollala River Alliance
In early April 2010, Senator Merkley of Oregon joined Kavita Heyn (American Rivers) and members of the Molalla River Alliance for a short rafting trip down the Molalla River.
The Molalla is a true remnant of the historical Oregon landscape a river corridor filled with cedar, hemlock, old-growth Douglas fir forest, and basalt rock canyons. As well as providing clean drinking water for the cities of Molalla and Canby, the river supports a treasure of ecosystems and offers year-round recreational opportunities. It is home to native winter steelhead and salmon runs, an abundance of wildlife, geological wonders and a profusion of recreational opportunities.
Because of these attributes, the Molalla is a candidate for Wild and Scenic River designation, with legislation currently in Congress sponsored by Senator Merkley, Senator Wyden and Representative Schrader, and American Rivers is working to ensure this permanent protection is achieved.
