Ty grew up seining for minnows and flipping rocks in Southwest Virginia streams. He pursued his passion for freshwater ecosystems at Virginia Tech, where he worked on research projects studying Bog Turtles in mountain fens, freshwater mussels in far Southwest Virginia, Bluehead Chubs and their nest associate species, and Brook Trout in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia.
