Community Action Training Program

American Rivers and the Sacramento Community Land Trust have partnered to design and facilitate the Community Action Training (CAT) Program, a 7-week program that empowers community members with the tools to be effective surveyors of their friends, family, and neighbors. This project aligns with the Morrison Creek Revitalization Project and the Sacramento Urban Creeks Revitalization Project, which are both currently focused on accurately assessing the needs of Sacramento residents and enacting a relevant response to those needs in partnership with the community.

The program lends insight from the Participatory Action Research (PAR) and Community-Based Participation Research (CBPR) models, developed by faculty at CSU Sacramento to center Sacramento residents in guiding meaningful change for their communities (learn more). Active members of the program will have the opportunity to enjoy the fellowship among fellow neighbors while hearing from community leaders across a range of special knowledge, and engage in deeper discussions about the strengths and challenges faced in the areas surrounding Morrison Creek. Each session of the training will address a salient topic of discussion which, through this program, will thread between housing, safety, transit and mobility, and more.

If you near Morrison Creek in the Avondale, Glen Elder, Southeast Village, or Fruitridge Manor neighborhoods, we invite you to apply! Catered food and all necessary materials will be provided by program staff. These sessions will be held in person at a community meeting center on Monday evenings in August and September 2025, plus a creek stewardship event in early August. Please view the flyer below for more details. As an appreciation for your involvement and time, each member of the program cohort will receive a stipend. Eligible applicants must be able to attend all sessions, including the stewardship event, in order to join the program.

If you have any questions or concerns about the program, your application, or your ability to participate, please email Kristan Culbert at kculbert@americanrivers.org.
