Mardi gras parade time is a fun, messy affair. The Krewe of Rio and Project Front Yard (a community-driven initiative of Lafayette Consolidated Government to address beautification and litter abatement) team up before, during and after this parade to PREVENT the abundance of litter, especially plastic bag litter, that happens during a typical mardi gras parade, from remaining on the streets and getting washed into our storm drains that lead directly to the Vermilion River. Volunteers meet up at the beginning of the parade and help Krewe members sort & contain their mardi gras bead packaging. Volunteers then follow the parade collecting litter and unwanted broken mardi gras beads (and other trinkets, plastic bags that easily end up in storm drains). At the end of the parade, plastic film collected from the floats during the parade is collected and sent for recycling.
