Event Date | Time: 10/02/2021 | 08:00 am to 12:00 pm

The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society is sponsoring the 18th Annual Fall River “Shady” Sweep on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021, in memory of our founder Dan Shade.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to canoe a section of the Muscatatuck River or walk along its bank while collecting trash and contributing positively to the environment and community.

Everyone is welcome to participate; parents or other responsible adults need to accompany small children. Please dress in clothing appropriate for outdoor work and relative to the current weather conditions.

Registration will be a drive-thru-style similar to the Spring Cleanup:

Participants will arrive at 8:00AM at Vernon Commons via Brown Street by Vernon Fire Station (turn right on Commons street and stop at the Vernon Commons shelter house). FMRS personnel will issue dry bags (containing medical kits, trash bags, hand sanitizer, site leader form), buckets and tools. Each site leader will document the worker’s names, shirt sizes and a brief description of the day’s events on the site leader form provided. An FMRS worker will document the group ID and cleanup location.

We suggest groups work cleaning sites in familiar areas to the crew and FMRS. Site leaders will be individually responsible for their parties and participation. Please inform an FMRS official if you have a preferred cleanup site or prefer to start that morning on-site. Or we can assign a site for you.

At 12pm, we will reconvene at the Shopping Center parking lot next to McDonalds/Country Chevrolet to collect reports and issued equipment. Jennings County Highway Department trucks will be there to collect trash, or groups are encouraged to take refuse straight to the Highway Garage/Recycle Center (either estimate weight, or record weigh at assigned scales TBD). They will pick up trash on-site if needed; coordinate with a FMRS official.

FMRS officials will issue promotional items, in a contact-fee protocol. Due to COVID 19 concerns, we will not be providing lunch at this year’s event.

Our goal, as always, is to do the best effort we can to clean our rivers and honor the memories of our members no longer with us.
