ABOUT AMERICAN RIVERS
Named one of the best groups to support in 2017 by “Outside” magazine, American Rivers protects wild rivers, restores damaged rivers, and conserves clean water for people and nature. Since 1973, American Rivers has protected and restored more than 150,000 miles of rivers through advocacy efforts, on-the-ground projects, and an annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers® campaign. Headquartered in Washington, DC, American Rivers has offices across the country and more than 355,000 members, supporters and volunteers. For more information please visit www.americanrivers.org.
American Rivers embraces and celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion in all that we do. Rivers Connect Us is more than just our tagline. The beauty of rivers is that they connect all people and communities, and we seek to build and embody this diversity in our organization and throughout the conservation field. The life experiences, knowledge, innovation, and talent that each individual brings to our work provides perspectives, experiences, and competencies which are critical to our effectiveness in protecting wild rivers, restoring damaged rivers, and conserving clean water for people and nature.
Foundation grants are a critical funding stream for American Rivers. The Foundation Relations Intern will be involved in many aspects related to identifying, developing and maintaining successful relationships with private foundations. The intern will conduct foundation research, which will include donor and prospect profiles and gather information and statistics about rivers for use in proposals and reports. They will draft or edit internal and external correspondence and fundraising materials, including acknowledgement letters, fact sheets, proposals, and reports. The intern may also update tip sheets and training materials for staff, as well as maintain and update information in the organization’s files and database. The Intern will assist with writing, editing and designing our internal fundraising newsletter – Inside Advancement, and may complete other duties as assigned.
The intern will receive trainings on Foundation fundraising and grants management – to include prospecting and research, donor cultivation, proposal and report writing, and budget and financial development. The intern will be invited to participate in weekly internal staff and team meetings and will have the opportunity to attend program presentations, webinars and other external training and informational sessions. The intern will engage regularly with a supervisor to review project assignments and career plans, seek advice and learn how their work can be applied to future jobs. In addition, the intern will be encouraged to set up informational interviews with staff and other organizations for mentorship and career advice. Upon completion of the internship, the intern will leave with a solid grounding in foundation fundraising, as well as a familiarity with river conservation issues, and nonprofit sector experience. In addition, they will have a portfolio of project outputs, such as research profiles, fact sheets and other writing samples.
