Ted Illston

Vice President, Policy and Government Relations

Ted Illston manages the Policy and Government Relations department for American Rivers. This entails tracking legislation and developing policy positions that are important to the organization’s priorities.  This includes, but is not limited to: hydropower reform, wild and scenic rivers, urban water management and supply, Clean Water Act issues, Safe Drinking Water issues, floodplain management and restoration, dam removal, and appropriations for water protection and restoration. 

Prior to joining American Rivers, Mr. Illston spent over ten years working for Congress.  First, spending four years as counsel on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Subcommittee on Water Resources and Infrastructure, and then over six years as Senior Counsel on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.  While working on Capitol Hill, Mr. Illston handled primarily Army Corps of Engineers and Environmental Protection Agency issues. Mr. Illston drafted four Water Resources and Development Acts (WRDA), three of which became law.
