Dr. Janae Davis

Associate Director of Conservation

Janae is an Associate Director of Conservation at American Rivers. She works to promote the health of the rivers, riverside lands and river communities in North Carolina and South Carolina to ensure clean and affordable drinking water, reduce flood risk, protect biodiversity, and assure sustainable and equitable access to conservation decision-making for frontline communities.

She believes that the most promising solutions for addressing climate change and biodiversity loss will emerge from community-based collaborations that address the multiple causes of environmental degradation and vulnerability to environmental harms including cultural erosion, economic inequality, unsustainable industrial practices and political disenfranchisement. Therefore, Janae is passionate about creating and supporting grassroots efforts that promote environmental protection using environmental justice and social justice principles.

She has held fellowships with the U.S. National Park Service, the Healing Our Waters – Great Lakes Coalition and the National Wildlife Federation designing and implementing research, and collaborating on projects focused on integrating justice principles into organizational structures and engagement with frontline communities.

Janae holds a B.A. in Sociology from North Carolina State University, a M.A. in Geography from the University of South Carolina and a Doctorate in Geography from Clark University in Worcester Massachusetts.

Favorite river: The beauty of Chattooga River is breathtaking! Every visit brings a new (to me) and amazing discovery.
