American Rivers embraces and celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion in all that we do. Rivers Connect Us is more than just our tagline. The beauty of rivers is that they connect all people and communities, and we seek to build and embody this diversity in our organization and throughout the conservation field.  Each individual brings life experiences, knowledge, innovation and talent to our work, providing perspectives, experiences and competencies that are critical to our effectiveness.

American Rivers is seeking a Social Media and Communications Intern who will be responsible for creating and maintaining social media content for the organization, publishing content to AmericanRivers.org, and writing content for our blog.  We are looking for someone who is obsessed with social media, ideally has experience with the WordPress platform, and has a passion for all things rivers.

The intern will improve their core communications skills by supporting the design and execution of social media posts. By helping to develop other social media campaigns and setting up web pages from scratch, the intern will also acquire strong back-end web skills. Through researching articles, interviewing American Rivers staff (where appropriate) and writing blog posts and website articles, the intern will both develop valuable interpersonal skills and learn how to tailor media to a specific target audience. The intern will compile marketing statistics (e.g. followers, likes, etc.) on the success of campaigns, work in the back-end of our eCRM, and remain current with best practices, strategies, and industry standards related to online communications.

  • Current or recent student, with educational background in marketing, communications, or environmental science a plus;
  • Experience with the effective marketing and utilization of social channels including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn;
  • Proven effectiveness with managing timely delivery of work against short deadlines;
  • We are a geographically dispersed team, so an ability to communicate effectively through email, phone, and Slack, is a must.

TIME COMMITMENT AND PAY:  The start date for American Rivers’ Social Media and Communications Internship is flexible (late fall or winter/spring semester).  This internship requires a commitment of between 10 and 25 hours per week with at least one day in the office.  Internships are unpaid; however, a travel subsidy of $5 per day is available to help offset the costs of the intern’s commute. In addition to the travel subsidy, where available we will work with the intern to gain school credit.

APPLICATIONS: Applications will be reviewed as they are received.  Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume to https://americanrivers.bamboohr.com/jobs/ . Please include in the cover letter why you are interested in the internship and your future career goals.  No phone calls please.
