The Human Resources Assistant  provides high level support to the Director of Human Resources to assist with ongoing organizational compliance matters, which may include oversight of various HR databases and operations, helping with annual functions such as the corporate insurance renewal, and other duties as assigned. The Assistant will also work in conjunction with the Vice President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice and provide administrative support to ongoing organizational DEIJ matters.  The Assistant is also expected to collaborate remotely with American Rivers staff based in field offices across the country. This is an ideal opportunity for a candidate to learn more about the Human Resources field. The ideal candidate is outcomes-driven, organized, detail-oriented, customer-friendly and committed to the American Rivers’ mission. This position is designed to be a hybrid model position with in-office expectations of two days per week at minimum in office at our HDQ office 


Human Resources (65%) 

  • Supports the Director of Human Resources in the design, implementation and administration of multiple HR programs, systems, and procedures. 
  • Create and present Microsoft PowerPoint presentations, manage the I-9 process, maintain confidential HR files 
  • Data entry and upkeep of HRIS systems 
  • Experience with ADP, BambooHR and Intacct a plus 
  • Maintains personnel records in office and online  
  • Upload organizational documents to HRIS systems  
  • Facilitates the on-boarding and off-boarding of employees. 
  • Review and download benefit invoices for Finance and Administration approval  
  • Support the Finance and Administration Team with corporate insurance renewal paperwork/process  
  • Support the Finance and Administration Team with insurance audit paperwork/process  
  • Support benefits administration which can include claims resolution, change reporting, and communicating benefit information to employees.   
  • Assists in managing annual open enrollment process.  
  • Collaborate with American Rivers staff in other field offices 
  • Handle confidential matters with discretion. 
  • Other duties as may be assigned; 

Diversity, Equity, Justice and Inclusion Support (20%) 

  • Assist the VP of DEIJ with scheduling  
  • Coordinate programming for speakers, trainers, and other Staff and Board DEIJ Committee events 
  • Compile and circulate learning materials and guidance documents for Equitable Community Engagement Workshops, Just Water Initiatives, DEIJ Office Hours, and other learning sessions. 
  • Organize and maintain digital DEIJ resources in Box and Slack 
  • Provide administrative support related to correspondence, memos, expenses, and reports 

General Administrative Duties (15%) 

  • Receiving, logging and distributing post mail and deliveries in the DC HDQ office and sending out post mail and packages. 


  • Passion for rivers, public lands, and engaging people 
  • Human Resources generalist experience a plus but not required  
  • Minimum of 1 year human resources experience and  
  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field, or equivalent combination of related education and professional experience. 
  • Ability to handle a high volume of activity in a fast-paced environment and independently prioritize with acute attention to detail, accuracy and organization. 
  • Ability to solve problems and exercise good judgment in implementing and applying policies appropriately 
  • Able to work effectively with a range of personalities and working styles and with people at all levels of the organization who are geographically dispersed 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (professional and diplomatic interactions) 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Strong writing skills

The salary for this position is $45,000-$52,000 depending on experience and qualifications. American Rivers offers full-time employees a generous benefits package that includes health, dental and life insurance; four weeks of paid vacation; 11 paid holidays and 3 floating holidays; 12 days of paid sick leave; and a 3% employer retirement contribution.
