Our History and Accomplishments

Following are just some of our selected accomplishments in the Northeast:

Restoring Rivers

  • In 2008 alone, provided technical and financial assistance to 174 groups in the Northeast. Implemented five river restoration projects in four states, re-connecting nearly 54 miles of rivers and streams that were previously fragmented by dams and impassable culverts.
  • Helped lead the effort to remove the 160-year-old Edwards Dam on Maine’s Kennebec River, which triggered the resurgence of large numbers of striped bass, salmon, sturgeon, and alewife and revitalized a local recreational economy, and helped make dam removal an accepted river restoration tool nationwide.
  • Instrumental in the effort to remove two dams on Maine's Penobscot River, and improve operations on a third dam.

Protecting Rivers

  • Spearheaded the campaign to pass the second largest Wild and Scenic River package in history to safeguard more than 1,000 miles of rivers across the country, including rivers in Vermont and Massachusetts.
