Our History and Accomplishments
Following are just some of our selected accomplishments in the Mid-Atlantic:
Restoring Rivers
- Named "Outstanding Conservation Organization for 2008" by Pennsylvania's Berks County Conservation District.
- Instrumental in the removal of dams on Pennsylvania's Tulpehocken Creek and Wyomissing Creek in the Delaware River watershed.
- Restored fish passage in Pennypack Creek, a tributary of the Delaware River, for the first time in 300 years.
- Led the effort in 2004 to remove Embrey Dam, restoring Virginia's Rappahannock River.
- Promoting natural flood protection solutions to state and local decision-makers, emergency management officials and hazard mitigation officers, and watershed organizations in New Jersey and across the region.
Protecting Rivers
- Raised visibility of threats to the Susquehanna in America's Most Endangered Rivers: 2005 edition, spurring the EPA to drop a controversial policy that would have legalized the dumping of partially treated sewage into the Susquehanna and other rivers nationwide.
- Successfully fought a boondoggle dam on the Delaware River and secured Wild and Scenic River protection for 100 miles of the Delaware.
Clean Water
- As a direct result of our advocacy, Pennsylvania will invest in green infrastructure at an unprecedented level with federal stimulus dollars. Already, the state has solicited “ready to go” projects totaling $30 million for clean water in Philadelphia.
