Jeanne Ison – Ohio River Sweep

Jeanne Ison

Jeanne Ison and her kids at a cleanup

Jeanne Ison developed the Ohio River Sweep in 1989 after viewing the trash conditions, just miles downstream of Cincinnati. The cleanup has occurred every year since then.

Each year, thousands of volunteers come together to clean the shores of the Ohio River, from Pittsburgh, PA to Cairo, IL. In her time leading the Ohio River Sweep, Jeanne recruited hundreds of site coordinators along the length of the Ohio River. The River Sweep encompasses more than 3,000 miles of shoreline in six states (Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana). She has raised millions of dollars to make sure the project continues and collected enough trash to fill a professional football stadium

Jeanne Ison was also the 2010 National River Cleanup® photo contest winner!
