Location: Big Thompson River
Organizer:

I am a camp counselor for a group of kids who will meet for two weeks this summer to do community service-based projects.  We will have between 6 and 20 kids ages 11 to 15.  The closest river cleanup to us is the Poudre River project (in Fort Collins, CO) and their event will happen during a time our camp is not in session.  An organizer from that event suggested we look into starting our own project for the waterway in our town (Loveland, CO), The Big Thompson.  This river flooded in the fall of 2013 and I know there is still a lot of debris and branches in some spots.  We can’t move stuff like that but we can pick up small to medium items of trash.  I am hoping to find out more of what might be involved before I make a commitment to hosting a full scale event – that might be something the campers help set up this year for next summer’s groups.  For now, I’d like to start with a private cleanup that involves only the kids from camp.  But I could use some help from you since I’ve never organized one of these before.  The campers’ safety is of great importance, of course.  And I could use some guidance as to who I’ll need to contact and when.  Our target dates are June 14 and July 12.

The rain date for the clean up is May 14th, same start and end times.

The cleanup will start and end at the Town’s gazebo on Railroad Street (adjacent to the river). We will bring everything we’ve collected to the gazebo area at the end (we will have pickup trucks gathering filled bags, etc. during the cleanup) for a picture, rough inventory, lunch (which we’ll provide), and we hope music. Volunteers should bring gloves and florescent vests if they have them (we can provide some), bug spray, and normal clothes, footwear, etc. for a cleanup.

Location: 591-677 US-550, Bernalillo, NM 87004, USA
Organizer:

In honor of Earth Day, let’s clean up 4 miles of the Rio Grande.  In November 2015, 13 of us cleaned up the 6 mile stretch of the river from Algodones Dam to US550.  In just under 4 hours, our team cleaned up over 1,400 lbs of trash! Help us continue the clean up!

We will meet at the SE parking lot of US550 and the river at 10am (Directions below).  Waste Management will bring some dumpsters to the site.   The plan is to clean up the SE corner of US550 and the river area before paddling down the river.

After cleaning up the US550 area, those who are interested will kayak/canoe/SUP/raft down the river from US550 to River’s Edge II in Rio Rancho.  We’ll pick up as much trash as possible from the river during the paddle.  We will run the shuttle for cars AFTER cleaning up the US550 area and BEFORE paddling down the river.

Your help is needed!   Some of our adaptive paddling participants will be joining us and the more people on the river, the safer everyone will be.

Kayak New Mexico will document the cleanup with photos, videos and GPS coordinates and will send the information to the ACA’s Club Stewardship Program.  We’ll weigh the material and record recyclables, landfill, etc and report the data to the ACA National Trash Track campaign.

This event is sponsored by the following companies:

* New Mexico Kayak Instruction, Inc.

* L.L. Bean

* ACA – American Canoe Association

* Waste Management

Gloves, trash bags, snacks, and water will be provided.

Directions to US550 SE corner and the river parking lot:
From I25 and US550 – take US550 west.  Immediately before you cross the river, turn left into the parking lot

From the west:  Take US 550 east and turn right into the parking lot immediately after crossing the bridge.

This means making correct and informed decisions on your clothing and gear, among other things, and an accurate assessment of your skills.  Since situations always change, it is your personal responsibility to ensure that your paddling is safe, no matter what may have been suggested from the information provided here. You, and you alone, are responsible for your safety and preparedness.  You are participating at your own risk.

Riverkeeper Sweep at Little Stony Point

River: Hudson River
Date: May 7, 2016 at 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Little Stony Point, NY
Organizer:

This cleanup location includes Little Stony Point State Park and the Hudson’s East Bank to Breakneck Ridge.  Shoreline cleaning at LSP can be done on foot.  Anything to the north will be done from kayak.  The shoreline is very rough, so kayaks should be plastic and you should not be afraid to scratch them.  Participants should be prepared with their own kayak, PFD, and immersion gear.  The water will still be cold (about 50-55 degrees) but the sun will be strong- so sunscreen is also recommended.  Work gloves and stable, protective shoes are highly recommended.  Great caution needs to be taken in climbing in and out of kayaks- and the riprap shoreline is very hazardous.  Use your best judgement!

People with motor boats can be a huge help in ferrying bags and tires back from the kayak crew.  We have hauled huge amounts of debris from the river in this stretch, and it will likely be the same again this year.

Participants will need to sign a volunteer service agreement with NYS Parks as well as the Riverkeeper waiver.  The VSA is vital for you to be covered by the NYS Parks insurance policy- it is for your benefit!

Thanks!  See you on the water!

Date: May 21, 2016 at 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Location: 300 N Water St, Albany, WI 53502

NEWS RELEASE: Sugar River Cleanup scheduled for Saturday May 21st

The Lake Winnetka Sugar River Improvement Association, Inc. along with the Decatur Lake Millrace Association will hold its annual Sugar River Cleanup in Albany, on Saturday, May 21st from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Registration for the cleanup begins at 9:00 at the Albany American Legion Hall at 300 N. Water St., across from the Albany boat ramp near the police/fire station.

Our goal is to remove as much garbage as possible from the river and its banks. An additional goal is to clear a path through fallen trees that totally block navigation of canoes and create hazards. The type of work varies from walking the banks or riding in canoes and picking up trash, to cutting tree branches and handing them to people on shore.

Equipment needed is canoes or small boats, chain saws, bow saws and waders, and–for those who do not have a craft to get out on the river–canoes, life preservers and paddles will be generously donated by Sweet Minnehaha Campground, Camp Crazy Horse and S & B Tubing. Free shuttle service will also be offered, and food and refreshments will be served to all volunteers. Our cleanup is registered with the American Rivers National River Cleanup, and they will provide trash bags. Scout groups can earn community service points by helping out.

We will get organized at 9 AM and begin cleaning up at 10 AM or sooner; however, a representative will be on-site at the Albany American Legion Hall to direct those who want to come later. Please volunteer your help or equipment. Come on out and help us keep our beautiful river sweet and clean—and enjoy the great outdoors after a long winter. Be sure to bring work gloves, wear a hat if it’s a sunny day, bring sunscreen and wear sunglasses to guard against the light reflected off the water.

For more information about the cleanup or the Lake Winnetka Sugar River Improvement Association, email lwsria@aol.com or call 608-862-1698 or 773-418-7123 or Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Lake-WinnetkaSugar-River-Improvement-Association-Inc/374367135943433

Earth day Rahway River Clean-up

River: Rahway River
Date: April 23, 2016 at 8:45 am
Location: Winfield Park, New Jersey
Organizer:

Friends—all volunteers are invited to celebrate Earth Day with Boy Scout Troop 330. Cub Scout Pack 30 and members of the Rahway River Watershed Association in a clean-up of the Rahway River on Saturday, April 23rd (with a rain date of Sunday, April 24th). The clean-up will focus on areas upstream and downstream of the dam at Winfield Park, New Jersey. It is our hope to have enough folks participate that we can have teams work as far upstream as the Garden State Parkway and downstream through Rahway River Park in Clark, Linden and Rahway. Plans are to meet at the parking area adjacent to the waterfall of the Rahway River by the dam at Winfield Park at 8:45. This is a great way to celebrate Earth Day and if you haven’t participated in an event like this before, you will find it invigorating, and you will feel good about what you have accomplished…it is also a lot of fun…especially for scouts and young adults as they always find something interesting. This adds both education and adventure to the event

The clean-up will generally be between 9-12, but any amount of time or effort that folks can volunteer is appreciated. There is always a large volume of floatable debris to pick up. This includes tires and of course floatables (cans, bottles, plastics, etc). The County of Union generously supplies gloves and garbage bags, and we solicit material donations (donuts, bagels, coffee, bottled water, paper towels, hand-wipes, etc) for all volunteers.

Last year, nearly 150 folks participated, including girl scouts, cub scouts, boy scouts, fishermen, local activists and citizens, and we pulled some amazing things from the river. Sponsors came through with coffee, bagels, danish, donuts, cookies, bottled water, and juice boxes. We also had coloring books, posters and other giveaways for the participants

All participants should wear jeans, long-sleeved shirts, gloves and boots, and waders are welcome for folks who like to get a little wet. I very much recommend that each participant bring a standard 5-gallon carry bucket with a handle (put your name on the bottom)…this makes for easy carrying of “stuff” for transfer to the large garbage bags. As was done in past years we also hope to put together a “tiger” team of strong adults willing to get down and dirty who can tackle some of the really big stuff that has been in the river for years…like tires and shopping carts. When we complete the event we do a basic inventory of the “big stuff” that we removed….and within approximately 24 hours Union County Parks removes and disposes of all the trash. There is no RSVP required but if you need more information or think you will attend please let me know by e-mail at rivercleanup@comcast.net

We will meet up at Downstream Adventures at 9 am to pass out trash bags and organize volunteers. Food, beer (for those over 21) and prizes for volunteers will take place at 5 at Downstream Adventures. Lunch will not be provided, but most volunteers will be near downtown Idaho Springs where there are many tasty choices! (Check out Tommyknockers, Smokin’ Yards, or Two Brother’s Deli).
