19th Annual Source to Sea Cleanup

River: The Connecticut River Watershed
Date: September 27, 2015 at
Location:
Organizer:

The Source to Sea Cleanup is an annual trash cleanup of the Connecticut River system – rivers, streams and banks, parks, boat launches, trails and more. Each fall, thousands of volunteers of all ages and abilities head out to places of their choice all along the four-state watershed (NH, VT, MA, CT) to clean the Connecticut River and its tributaries on foot or by boat.

Hard Work, Real Fun, True Impact

In 2014, more than 2,000 volunteers pulled over 47 tons of trash from over 139 miles of river banks and waterways. Volunteers use human power and sometimes heavy equipment to pull out everything from recyclables, fishing equipment and food waste to tires, televisions and refrigerators.

The water is cleaner, river banks are safer and wildlife are happier thanks to the generous efforts of the sponsors, businesses, watershed organizations, Girl and Boy Scout Troops, school groups, municipalities and community members who make the event possible.

How To Get Involved

For more information about the Cleanup, go to www.ctriver.org/projects/source-to-sea-cleanup. There you can:

  • Join a Group: Find a group near you accepting cleanup volunteers and spend a few hours picking up trash.
  • Lead a Group: Start a cleanup group in your town. Find a site in need of cleaning, organize volunteers and removal of trash. Here are tips on how to lead a successful cleanup.
  • Volunteer: Help hang posters, pack cleanup supplies, or report a trash site in need of cleaning.

Licking County River Round Up

River: Licking River Watershed
Date: September 12, 2015 at 8:00 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Licking County, Ohio
Organizer:

The River Round Up began as a Newark City Litter initiative in 1990 to clean up the Licking River. The annual river clean up brought out hundreds of volunteers who pulled tires, shopping carts and mountains of trash from an 18 mile stretch of the river.  Through their efforts, a river that had all but been abandoned, has seen a rebirth of aquatic and bird life.

Due to the closing of a canoe livery and the changing of staff, the River Round Up ended in 2003.

After a break of eight years, several Licking County and City of Newark agencies came together to bring back the River Round Up in 2011.  The recent clean ups have been very successful.  In 2014, for the 20th anniversary of the River Round Up, 306 volunteers cleaned up 30 miles of waterway.  Over 250 tires were collected and disposed of properly.  12 cubic yards of trash were collected and sent to the landfill.  10 cubic yards of recyclable materials (including scrap metal) were collected and recycled.  By separating the tires and recyclables, this waste was diverted from the landfill.  7 River Round Up Day Proclamations were signed by local leaders.

On Saturday, September 12, 2015, our goal is to continue this incredible community-based conservation tradition.  Clean up locations throughout the county include:   Pataskala and the South Fork Licking River, Granville and the Raccoon Creek , Hebron and the storm water ditch system, Union Township and the South Fork Licking River, St. Lousiville and the North Fork Licking River, Heath and the creeks flowing into the South Fork Licking River, Newark and the main stem Licking River, and Hanover and Blackhand Gorge.

Volunteer opportunities include: walking along waterway banks picking up trash, paddling canoes and kayaks in deeper sections picking up trash, driving vehicles to shuttle people and equipment, helping prep the week before the event, assisting with registration on site, helping clean up boats and equipment after the event, photographing the event, and more.  There is a place for everyone to participate.

Location:
Organizer:

Through strong partnerships, community support and funding from the Great Lakes Commission, theMichigan Department of Environmental Quality, the Friends of the Shiawassee River and the Shiawassee County Health Department  have removed hundreds of cubic yards of debris and more than 500 tires from the Shiawassee River during the past 17 years.

Since the first cleanup event in 1997, FOSR has engaged hundreds of volunteers in our Annual River Cleanup events. The goal of these cleanups is to remove man-made sources of pollution from the Shiawassee River through volunteer efforts, city and county partnerships, and support from local businesses. The impact of these partnerships has built a sense of pride among the community and promotes the Shiawassee River as a recreational asset, and as the centerpiece to many Shiawassee County communities. In 2014, approximately 140 volunteers participated. Corunna Rotary cleaned at McCurdy Park and Corunna Dam, and the Owosso Rotary Club volunteered at Harmon-Partridge Park in Owosso.

For the 2014 clean-up event, volunteers met at the Oakland Bridge (behind the baseball fields) at 9 a.m. on July 26th.  Clean-up crews were directed to multiple locations along the river from Shiatown Dam to Henderson Park including:

  • Corunna Dam

  • McCurdy Park

  • Oakwood Ave. Bridge

  • Downtown Owosso

  • Henderson Park
  • Owosso Amphitheater

  • Harmon-Partridge Park

  • Hopkins Lake

Sweep the Hooch

River: Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
Location: 1978 Island Ford Parkway, 30350
Organizer:

We are gearing up for another BIG cleanup this year, on April 11! Although it’s obvious to most that river cleanups improve the quality of our water, we’ve discovered that they do much more than that. Cleanups are also a great way to develop a sense of “river community.” This is your chance to volunteer and be part of this community.

And, we are growing! Last year we added Georgia State Park sites (Sweetwater Creek, Chattahoochee Bend, and Don Carter), plus Gwinnett County (Jones Bridge) and Riverview Landing in Mableton.

In 2014 580 volunteers removed 7.275 tons of river refuse with more than half ton of trash recycled. That’s 14,500 pounds!!!

We will be targeting the area of the stream from the Berkshire Community to North Point Road! Volunteers of all ages and abilities are needed! Help us remove the trash before it flows into Back River, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean! Every piece of trash removed is a small victory to be celebrated!

We run our cleanups as a family event with plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We welcome every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the cleanup. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we need people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to help at registration, setup food and snacks as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. We will provide lunch and snacks as well as gloves. A limited number of tools are available for sign-out, but suggest bringing your own if you have them.

Registration will open at 7:00 am and we will enter the stream at 8:00 am after a brief orientation!

OceanBlueProject presents “Nye Creek Coastal Fungi Project”. This project will use mycofiltration to lower pollution that flows into our ocean! Our goal is to use fungi species and plants to remove toxins and pathogens from non-point sources. The majority of pollutants going into the ocean come from activities on land. Nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and dog waste not only affect ecosystems, they can also have harmful effects on the economy. Fungi eats nitrogen, phosphorus, and E. Coli from animal waste. Join us to help remove litter, and help with our Ocean projects.

Location: 964 Claryville Road, Claryville, NY 12725, USA

CLARYVILLE, NY—On April 20, 2015, to usher in spring, Frost Valley YMCA employees will take part in their 8th Annual Roadside Clean-Up event. The roadside cleanup began in 2006 to give back to the local community and take care of the environment.

Says Katia Martin, Frost Valley’s Day Camp Director, who coordinates the event, “We have a social responsibility to keep our community clean.”

Frost Valley considers local community projects and support to be a vital part of its mission. CEO Jerry Huncosky began the Roadside Clean-Up as a way of supporting the local community and tying that with another part of the Frost Valley mission – environmental stewardship.

Last year, 25 staff members, including CEO Jerry Huncosky, joined together to clean up debris from 14.5 miles of both Frost Valley and Claryville Roads. Frost Valley staff and Huncosky are eager to collectively roll up their sleeves and provide the same level of stewardship again this year.

About Frost Valley YMCA

The Frost Valley YMCA is located in the heart of the “forever wild” Catskill Mountains. We are, at heart, a summer camp all year long, serving people through Camp, School Programs, Family and Group Retreats and East Valley Ranch.
