Dam Nation: a snapshot of river restoration efforts in the US
Rivers are our lifeblood, providing clean drinking water, fish and wildlife habitat, and places to fish, paddle, and reconnect with nature. But tens of thousands of dams block rivers across our country. A river is defined by its free flow, and a dam blocks that flow, damaging river health.
American Rivers is a leader in removing obsolete dams to improve fish and wildlife, water quality, public safety, and recreation.
This map provides a snapshot of critical dam issues around the country. Click on the flags below to explore examples of dams that have been successfully removed; dams that need to come down; and new dams proposed for construction.
Map Key:
- Green = Dam removal success
- Yellow = Dam that should be removed
- Red = Proposed new dam
