River restoration is becoming more and more important as the demand on our freshwater ecosystems for drinking water, fisheries habitat and outdoor recreation rises with our population and our appreciation of the importance of these freshwater "ecological services."
As part of our effort to help manage these service in the most efficient and environmentally sound way possible, American Rivers is engaged in a number of ways to help promote sound river restoration.
American Rivers is working on an exciting new initiative, the National River Restoration Science Synthesis (NRRSS), with some of the country's leading aquatic scientists. The goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive national database of river and stream restoration projects and use it to evaluate current stream restoration practices and to improve the scientific and technical framework of future restoration projects.
American Rivers works to advance other relevant river science throughout the country. To accomplish this, scientists on American Rivers's board directors formed the Science and Technology Advisory Committee (STAC). Members of this committee conduct their own research, but also help American Rivers coordinate with other scientific projects around the country.
