American Rivers Launches National River Cleanup 2010

Washington, DC — American Rivers, the nation’s leading river conservation organization, today announced the kickoff of its 2010 National River Cleanup season and the strengthening of the program through the hiring of a full-time National River Cleanup Campaign Manager.
Last year, American Rivers sponsored the most successful National River Cleanup yet with hundreds of thousands of volunteers removing tons of trash on rivers across the country. This year, through an online marketing campaign, new sponsorships, and increased local outreach, American Rivers plans to make the 2010 National River Cleanups the most successful to date.
American Rivers has also simplified the registration process. Volunteers can find their closest river cleanup, information on how to organize a new river cleanup, and frequently asked questions and answers at www.AmericanRivers.org/Cleanup. In addition, cleanup organizers will receive a kit with free trash bags, T-shirts, and day-of supplies.
In addition, Ginny Crake has joined American Rivers as the first National River Cleanup Campaign Manager. Ginny previously worked at the Alice Ferguson Foundation where she was responsible for the planning, implementation, and growth of the annual Potomac River cleanup, which boasts more than 10,000 volunteers each year. Ginny also managed the Trash-Free Potomac Watershed Initiative, the Trash-Free Potomac Facility Program, and Litter Enforcement Week.
“It’s easy to participate in a cleanup and help protect and restore the river you live on or care about,” said Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers. “With Ginny on board, we’ll be able to engage more Americans, and have an even greater impact on rivers nationwide.”
Through a unique partnership with AARP, National River Cleanup is now integrated into AARP’s Create The Good effort – a massive mobilization of America’s volunteers. With corporate partners like Cox Enterprises, Tom’s of Maine, Boulder Canyon Natural Foods, Subaru and Green Mountain Coffee, even more people across the country are aware of this great opportunity to make a difference for their local rivers.
