62 Dams Removed to Restore Rivers in 2012

Communities in 19 states, working in partnership with non-profit organizations and state and federal agencies, removed 62 dams in 2012, American Rivers announced today. Outdated or unsafe dams came out of rivers across the country, restoring 400 miles of streams for the benefit of fish, wildlife, and people across the country.

American Rivers Opposes Cutting Protections for Wild and Scenic Merced River

A bill introduced today, HR 934, by Representative Tom McClintock (R-CA), would remove long-standing Wild and Scenic River protections from a section of the Merced River and allow the Merced Irrigation District to pursue raising a spillway at New Exchequer Dam and inundate almost a mile of one of California’s last, best, free-flowing rivers. This bill would mark the first time a federal Wild and Scenic River is essentially de-designated for the purpose of raising a dam.

Hopewell Mills Dam Removal Begins in Taunton

Excavators today began chipping away at concrete that has held back the Mill River for decades. Within days, the impoundment behind the Hopewell Mills Dam will drop, and the river will begin to transform, opening up fish and wildlife habitat that hasn’t been available for nearly 200 years.

American Rivers and NOAA award $696,692 to restore rivers and fisheries in California, Delaware, Massachusetts, and Oregon

–Rivers and communities will benefit from nearly $700,000 in grants awarded through the national partnership between American Rivers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Restoration Center. This funding will support six projects throughout California, Delaware, Massachusetts and Oregon aimed at restoring fisheries, improving public safety, and reducing flood risks.
