Vice Chair of American Rivers to Serve as Deputy Interior Secretary

David Hayes has been chosen by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for the position

Washington, DC -- David Hayes, Vice Chair of American Rivers, the nation’s leading river conservation organization, has been chosen by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to serve as Deputy Interior Secretary.

Mr. Hayes, who held the same position during the Clinton administration and was also a member of President Barack Obama’s transition team, has served on the board of directors of American Rivers since 2002.

Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers, made the following statement:

“David has over 25 years of experience and has an impressive track record of protecting threatened lands and improving water management in the west and throughout the nation. He has been an incredible asset to American Rivers, and the Department of the Interior will benefit from his many talents. We congratulate David on his new post.”

“David is a consummate problem solver, with the rare ability to bring together diverse interests around thorny issues, and achieve lasting settlements that bring meaningful results.”
“He has an excellent grasp of not only the legal angles of natural resource challenges, but the scientific and technical aspects as well.”

“David has provided exceptional leadership on efforts to restore the Missouri River and to improve water management in California. This expertise will become even more important over the next several years as our country begins to feel the effects of global warming.  The climate crisis will impact water supplies and rivers first and worst, and the Department of the Interior must confront this challenge with new, innovative, 21st century approaches.  David Hayes is a great choice to help Secretary Salazar realize that goal.”
