Press Conference to be Held this Friday on Local River Restoration Project

Nevada City--On Friday, April 17 from 10am-11am a press conference will be held at Stocking Flat Floodplain on Deer Creek in Nevada City, CA to discuss the Deer Creek Restoration Project.  Speakers include Kyle Leach, a geologist from Holdrege & Kull Engineering; Grayson Coney, the Tsi-Akim Maidu Cultural Director; and Steve Rothert, the Director of American Rivers' California Field Office.  

This three-acre restoration project is centered on restoring function to a unique floodplain habitat in a Sierra stream in California that is considered critical to the health of the system. The project involves reconnecting the stream with its floodplain by first removing a levee, re-grading the floodplain, and then planting native riparian vegetation.

This multiple partner effort will produce greater habitat for migratory and riparian songbirds as well as fish, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, and other wildlife including species of special concern. Additionally, the project will promote groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, and filter storm water. 
 
In addition to creating a healthy river system that will benefit both wildlife and the community, this project will also help build the next generation of river stewards.   Local 7th-12th grade students will study the river’s scientific, historic, and cultural aspect, and directly participate in the restoration.

This project was made possible through support from American Rivers, PG&E, the Environmental Protection Agency, California Resources Agency, BLM, Nevada County, the City of Nevada City, Friends of Deer Creek, and the Forest Charter School.
