Way Down Upon the Suwannee River...

September 27, 2010 | National River Cleanup, Restoring Rivers

Made famous as the Florida state song, the Suwannee River is getting extra attention thanks to Current Problems, Inc and partners who are hosting The Great Suwannee River Cleanup.  In conjunction with American Rivers’ National River Cleanup™ the Great Suwannee River Cleanup will take place throughout the months of September, October, and November.  There is still time for you to pick a section to clean up along this wild river.

To participate or learn more contact Ms. Fritzi S. Olson, Executive Director of Current Problems, Inc, by email aar@currentproblems.org or phone 352-264-6827.  To see a map of the sections along the river and are part of the cleanup click here.

Why is the Suwannee River important?  It is the only major waterway in the South Eastern United States that is “unspoiled” by major pollution.  However, trash still accumulates on its shoreline.  Flowing from Georgia, through Florida to the Gulf of Mexico, the Suwannee River stretches for almost 266 miles through swamps, high limestone banks, and salt marshes.  Also known for its “healing powers” the resorts built along Suwannee’s shores have long been a tourist destination. This is all the more reason, to join the thousands of volunteers who will be cleaning up this historic and influential river.
