Last Saturday, on National Trails Day, we dedicated the Wateree River Blue Trail along with several partners including Kershaw County, Central Midlands Council of Governments, Congaree Land Trust, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Congaree National Park. Immediately following remarks from South Carolina state senator Vincent Sheheen and South Carolina state representative Laurie Funderburk, over 100 participants paddled the first six mile section of the blue trail.
It was an inspiring event. It was the first river trip for many of the participants. Most had never experienced the Wateree River. Despite the size of the group, we were still able to see bald eagles, several great blue herons, and a number of Mississippi kites. Hopefully the trip will inspire a new generation of river stewards to stand up for the Wateree River and others for years to come.
Adventure Carolina, an awesome outfitter in the Columbia area provided boats, guides, and shuttle. Check them out at www.adventurecarolina.com If you are interested in paddling the beautiful Wateree River Blue Trail contact Adventure Carolina or the Wateree Dam Bait Store 830-438-1293.
