One Book, One Columbia reading with American Rivers
January 23, 2012 | Blue Trails, Protecting Rivers, Wild and Scenic Rivers

Associate Director, Southeast Conservation
One Book, One Columbia kicked off last week reading “Saints at the River” by Ron Rash. All residents of the city will read the same book at the same time over the next six weeks.
With a wild and scenic rivers theme, it was only natural for the Columbia, SC office of American Rivers to join in the discussion and connect the community to its rivers. Southeast Regional Director, Gerrit Jobsis, will be part of a February 16 discussion panel with Mayor Benjamin to explore how Columbia is connecting the three rivers (Congaree, Saluda, and Broad) that run through it and how to protect the river from future impacts while enjoying its economic benefits.
On Saturday, March 24, American Rivers and our partners will celebrate the Congaree River Blue Trail and Three Rivers Greenway with a canoe and kayak trip starting near Columbia.
The Congaree River Blue Trail, a water trail that helps people explore the river and connects the community to its treasured landscapes, was designated as a national recreation trial by the Bush administration.
More recently, Columbia was recognized by President Obama’s administration as a model for how communities are connecting with America’s Great Outdoors through their rivers.
The Three Rivers Greenway was recently named an America’s Great Outdoors priority project for South Carolina by the Department of the Interior with the goal of expanding the greenway with trails and river access.
