The Congaree River truly showed its ability to connect the Columbia, SC metro area communities when American Rivers hosted a river paddle on Saturday, March 24 to celebrate the Congaree River Blue Trail and Three Rivers Greenway.
Press conference speakers, including the Mayor of Cayce and members of Columbia City Council, Richland County Council and Lexington County Council, emphasized the river’s value for recreation, quality of life and economic growth.
Following the press event, more than 50 participants enjoyed a two-mile paddle down the Congaree River. In collaboration with the Richland County Public Library about 15 leaders from their Teen Advisory Board were among those joining the paddle.
This event was made possible by support from the Richland County Conservation Commission and is also a culmination of the City’s One Book, One Columbia project which used a city-wide reading program to explore Columbia’s river connections.
