One Man's Vision: First Ever Rock River Sweep

July 1, 2010 | National River Cleanup, Restoring Rivers

Rock River, Illinois (photo by Frank Masterman)

Frank Masterman is a man of vision and passion.  He understands the multitude of problems trash cause in his local Rock River in Oregon, Illinois and was inspired to take action.  He has transformed what began as a single cleanup in 2009 into the “1st ever Great Rock River Sweep.”

As part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup™, the Great Rock River Sweep will be held in communities all along the river on Saturday, July 31, 2010. From Horicon, Wisconsin to Rock Island, Illinois the cleanup will span 285 miles and include at least 27 communities.

American Rivers invites you to participate as a Site Coordinator or volunteer in the Great Rock River Sweep by contacting Frank Masterman by email rockriversweep@yahoo.com or by visiting www.rockriversweep.org

Why is the Rock River so special? Rock River flows through Horicon Marsh State Wildlife area, which is home to millions of nesting waterfowl and resting migratory birds in the state of Wisconsin. The Rock River is also a fisherman’s dream for catfish, walleye, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and much more.

If you would like to host your own cleanup please visit www.AmericanRivers.org/cleanup or call 1-877-347-7550.
