Clean Sweep of the Great Miami RiverJuly 27, 2012 | Water Pollution, National River Cleanup
The rain didn’t discourage the crowd of 85 volunteers from Cox Media Group Ohio, Manheim Cincinnati, and University of Dayton on the river last week. For the third year in a row, the Clean Sweep of the Great Miami River was a success in removing litter and debris from the river that flows through downtown Dayton, Ohio.
Both American Rivers and Cox Media Group Ohio are proud sponsors of this watershed-wide cleanup. MacIntosh Park was one site of many river cleanups throughout the weekend, but alone we collected over one ton of trash including 8 tires, a vacuum cleaner, a cell phone, a Justin Bieber keychain, and the list goes on…
This cleanup is well loved within the community, with TV crews, journalists, police officers, and of course the volunteers along with families and friends, giving their time on behalf of the river they love. This cleanup was extra special as we discussed The City of Dayton’s plans to revitalize much of the river banks for recreational purposes and remove outdated dams on the Great Miami River.
