Kayaker Finds Wildlife, Calm in Drifting Commute

Journal Gazette – (November 18, 2008): When Paul Fry-Miller passed a deer on his way to work, it had that all too common deer-in-headlights look, even though there were no headlights to be found.

Then, Fry-Miller heard a loud noise. It made him jump, and he spun his head. It was just a beaver thumping its tail. When he turned around to look at the deer, it was nowhere to be found.

And he paddled along.

Since April of this year, Fry-Miller has kayaked to work whenever possible. Fry-Miller has commuted 20 to 30 minutes his entire working life. At times, it took 50 minutes.

He’s been a physician’s assistant at Manchester Clinic for about a year and a half now, a job to which he used to drive.

Then on April 22 of this year, gas hit $3.50 a gallon.

“It happened (that) it was Earth Day,” Fry-Miller says. “That was the day I said, ‘OK, I’ll do it.’ ”

Thus, he started kayaking to work.
