I remember watching TV news coverage of the Cuyahoga River on fire. I remember wondering how a river could be so polluted that it could burn. The next year, my class held a schoolyard cleanup as part of the first Earth Day event, and we all received “Ecology Flag” stickers for participating. I remember the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Water Act, because we discussed in earth science class how it would require wastewater to be treated before being returned to rivers.

Growing up in suburban Maryland, my brother and I spent long summer days playing in the small creek behind our house. I don’t think the creek had a name – we just called it “the creek.” Down there, we were in a different, wonderful world, away from adults and free to let our imaginations roam.

I remember walking with my dad across Salem, Mass, from our house in North Salem to my Grammy’s house in Witchcraft Heights, when I was 4 years old. When we walked over Mount Pleasant and down Howley St., over the North River Canal, I remember smelling the sweet, pungent odor of the chemicals discharged into the canal from the leather factories in Salem and Peabody.

October 5, 2012 | Water Pollution, National River CleanupLeading an 8 person boat, listening to the swoosh of the water fly under my port-side oar, feeling the beat of all 8 rowers turning their oars in sync with a “click.” There are no words to accurately describe this feeling on a calm morning out on the Potomac River with my crew team, watching the sun rise before the craziness of a 9th grade school day began.
