On Friday, I had the privilege of attending the White House Conference on Conservation held at the Department of the Interior. It was an inspirational afternoon, with river restoration prominently featured. President Obama spoke about initiatives to promote stream restoration and provide opportunities for fishing and other outdoor recreation.

Some of you may have seen some of my tweets or one of the American Rivers retweets sent during the initial meetings of this years Great Lakes day hosted by the Healing Our Waters coalition, of which we're a proud member. Members of the coalition are coming into Washington D.C. from around the Great Lakes to meet with their members of Congress to talk about a number of different issues around the Great Lakes.

This week, news broke with compelling photos of the devastating effects of selenium in waterways. Mutated brown trout, sporting two heads similar to the likes of blinky a la The Simpsons, were found near polluted creeks in southern Idaho. The area of concern has been severely impacted by phosphate mines (more than 30 in operation) with toxic selenium contamination killing horses, livestock, and wildlife while also devastating stream cutthroat trout habitat.

President Obama’s proposed federal budget cuts funding for clean water and drinking water infrastructure (pdf) by about $350 million from what we ended up with last fiscal year. This infrastructure funding is critical to protect public health, and part of the overall budget for the Environmental Protection Agency, which was cut by $105 million. Programs that received boosts include funding for the Chesapeake Bay and assistance to states to implement environmental programs.
