Green Infrastructure Helps Manage Runoff, Reduce Flood Damages

Just a few months ago the Susquehanna and Delaware basins in Pennsylvania were sustaining the worst flooding since record-breaking Hurricane Agnes hit in ’72. Today, the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania’s Patriot News reports that the Susquehanna is recording levels that match record drought years of 1910 and 1946.

National River Cleanup® joins forces on the Potomac River

National River Cleanup® joined the Potomac Conservancy last Saturday for a sunny and productive morning out on our Nation’s River. The river cleanup site in Cabin John, Maryland along the C&O Canal was one of hundreds of cleanup sites that worked out on the Potomac River as part of the Alice Ferguson Foundation 24th Annual Potomac River Watershed cleanup.

Green Infrastructure Can Save Local Governments Money

With increasing urbanization comes an increasing area of rooftops, parking lots, and highways - hard surfaces that are impermeable to water. Rain that once soaked into fields and forests, now runs off these hardened surfaces in excessive amounts. This runoff flows untreated into storm drains and local waterways, carrying a variety of pollutants that foul our waters and cause health risks. The volume of runoff can be so high that it erodes stream banks and causes localized flooding.
