Meadow Stewards Group formed for Hope Valley Restoration Project

On May 6th a large group of passionate citizens from both California and Nevada came out to Hope Valley Meadow for a volunteer orientation. American Rivers and local partners are leading an effort to rehabilitate this iconic meadow that lies in a high Sierra watershed that feeds both states. The Alpine Watershed Group and Friends of Hope Valley helped recruit and coordinate this Meadow Stewards group, and were looking for volunteers interested in helping with water quality monitoring, streamflow monitoring, and photo monitoring in Hope Valley.

North Carolina Fracking Law Vetoed, Veto Overturned

North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue vetoed S820, the North Carolina law that would allow fracking to happen in the state. The bill would have rushed to open the state up to fracking without the appropriate studies to assure that the clean waters of the state were protected from polluted fracking waste water.

Tubing The Shenandoah Puts Importance Of Clean Water Into Focus

Fracking With Diesel

Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been developing permitting guidance for hydraulic fracturing operations using diesel. The guidance will be the first federal policy focused on protecting drinking water sources from fracking.

A Repeat of 2011? Dirty Water Riders in the House Interior Appropriations Bill

Today, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies will mark up their appropriations bill for fiscal year 2013. This bill authorizes spending for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Department of Interior (DOI), and other agencies like the Forest Service. Unfortunately, in a repeat of 2011, the House Interior-EPA Appropriations bill includes significant cuts to critical funding for water infrastructure as well as a number of dirty water riders that put polluters before people.

Dirty Water in the Farm Bill

Right on the heels of the latest attacks on the Clean Water Act, the Senate is now preparing to take up the Farm Bill (S. 3240). This year’s bill includes multiple dirty water amendments that seek to prevent the Administration from moving forward on various clean water policies or to roll back and undermine the Clean Water Act itself.
