Here in Georgia, it’s been a cool, wet spring so far. That’s an especially good thing after drought conditions last year that were as severe here as anywhere in the country. But in my conversations with local water managers and other water-watchers lately, I’ve noticed a unanimous sentiment: the nagging worry that we’ll have another dry summer.

From where I sit in Georgia, it’s spring. The rains are here, flowers are in bloom (as they have been since January), rivers are running high(er), and drought, at least for now, is far from the headlines. Yet, I know what is lurking just around the corner. Drought and water issues will be making news again this summer in communities across the Southeast, like a recurring bad dream.

The Wild and Scenic Chetco River is renowned for its world-class salmon and steelhead runs, and crystal clear water. However, it is still vulnerable to mining thanks to the General Mining Law of 1872 – which gives mining precedence over all other uses. Out of concern for the impact that this mining could have on this special place, American Rivers listed the Chetco as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers® of 2010.

Great news! The Colorado Water Conservation Board has decided to stop funding a study investigating a potential 500-mile pipeline from Wyoming’s Flaming Gorge Reservoir to the Colorado Front Range. This pipeline would have withdrawn massive amounts of water from the Green River- a beautiful western gem running through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.

Remember back in good old 2011, when the Missouri River flooded like crazy and everyone wondered if it would ever stop? Boy did it stop in 2012! The flood has been nearly forgotten with the massive drought conditions across the Midwest. In 2012, American Rivers listed the Missouri River as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers®. It truly continues to be endangered.

A couple of months ago communities along the Crystal River in Colorado gathered in Redstone, CO and Carbondale, CO to discuss the appropriateness of a Wild Scenic Designation to protect the river from new dam and trans-basin diversion projects. Four panelists with experience working to designate Wild and Scenic Rivers in Colorado and throughout the country spoke about various aspects of the law, challenges faced in designation, and recreational, ecological, economic benefits of designation.

Three months ago, we announced a tentative deal to spare western Wyoming’s Hoback River from industrial scale gas drilling – if we could raise $8.75 million to buy out a Texas energy company’s oil and gas leases by the end of the year.
