North Carolina is the latest state to look at allowing development of its shale gas deposits using hydrologic fracturing (or fracking). On the American Rivers blog, we have previously discussed the hazards to our rivers and clean water supplies that fracking poses. Most recently, we highlighted the concerns surrounding natural gas development with the inclusion of the Grand River in Ohio on our annual list of America’s Most Endangered Rivers®.

Walking along the northern end of the Grand River last summer reminded me of some of the best national parks I’ve visited across the country.  The bird watching is even more amazing than most areas in the United States.  Kingfishers flew about, Lesser Yellow Legs trotted the shore, and even a Bald Eagle soared by the area.  This year a vibrant male Scarlett Tanager was spotted!

A Love For The Hoback

In the summer of 2006, I rode my horse along Monument Ridge riding to the East towards Bondurant.  Below me several miles of the Hoback River stretched out running West to East.  I stopped at the head of Horse Pasture Draw just before the ridge turned north.  From this vantage point, I could see three mountain ranges— the Wyoming Range behind me, the Gros Ventre Wilderness in front, and to the South and East the spine of the Wind River Range.
