Some American Rivers staff was in the field earlier today, checking out a dam removal project site on Darby Creek, near Philadelphia, PA. They shared two videos from the site, amidst the early winds and rain from advancing Hurricane Sandy. American Rivers is working to remove four barriers in the creek and promote green infrastructure in nearby communities to restore habitat, reduce flooding, and improve clean water.

On September 29 a group of more than 60 volunteers and project partners gathered in Indian Valley meadow for a volunteer work and education event. Indian Valley, located in the Eldorado National Forest, forms the headwaters of the North Fork Mokelumne River. Although strikingly beautiful, with sweeping views and rugged volcanic spires, the meadow’s condition is highly degraded because of historic grazing and other human impacts.

American Rivers and the Garden District Neighborhood Association recently received a grant through Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District’s Green Infrastructure Partnership Program. The funding is helping transform an area on Milwaukee’s Southside into a sustainable showcase for urban community gardens across the country.

I can remember visiting my grandmother in Memphis and going to Mud Island on the Mississippi River to wade through the concrete, scaled model of the Mississippi River Basin, seeing how all of the different tributaries and states connected. An impressive model given that the river drains 40% of the country – and suffers from correspondingly big pollution problems.

Fifteen years ago Snow Creek Meadow Preserve was a nameless discarded place, the undevelopable floodplain around Mammoth’s Snow Creek Condos in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Then in 1996, a group of friends including a landscape architect, two civil engineers, an Olympic gold medalist, and a graphic artist, decided to restore the area.

American Rivers was recently recognized for their work with the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee. An award was presented at a recognition ceremony at their Annual Meeting. I was there to accept the award on American Rivers behalf. Over the past year we helped the Housing Authority secure $225,000 from the Fund for Lake Michigan of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation for bioswales in a reconstruction project of Wisconsin's largest public housing cluster on Milwaukee's northwest side.
