On November 2nd, the new stretch of the White Salmon River through the reservoir section and old dam site, down to the mouth of the Columbia opened to paddlers. And on Sunday the 11th, Wet Planet Whitewater hosted a float to explore and celebrate this stretch.

Drowned towns are towns that have been deserted and submerged by the reservoirs created by dams. So if you want to impress your friends with some eerie river trivia, wow them with your knowledge of these sunken ghost towns.

Some American Rivers staff was in the field earlier today, checking out a dam removal project site on Darby Creek, near Philadelphia, PA. They shared two videos from the site, amidst the early winds and rain from advancing Hurricane Sandy. American Rivers is working to remove four barriers in the creek and promote green infrastructure in nearby communities to restore habitat, reduce flooding, and improve clean water.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service, in partnership with the Town of Troy and American Rivers, worked to remove a dam on Denson’s Creek in Montgomery County, NC a week ago (Tues, Sept 11). The dam was built by the Town of Troy over 50 years ago to provide water supply, but it had long since stopped serving that purpose. Removing the dam will restore and reconnect habitat for several rare mussels and other high priority species.
