Clean Water Success on South Carolina’s Saluda

On the last weekend of July, a friend and I went to the Saluda River, just a few miles from downtown the Columbia, SC to cool off, kayak and fish – cooling off being the top priority with temperatures topping 100 degrees.  We were not the only ones with that idea as we were joined by flotillas of families, anglers and paddlers.  It’s no secret that the Saluda is the coolest place in famously hot Columbia, as waters released from the bottom of Lake Murray Dam stay cool all summer long.

How are dams removed? This video shows a portion of the removal process for the Harmony Junction Dam on Connoquenessing Creek north of Pittsburgh, removed in 2009 to provide fish passage, increase boating access, to eliminate a public safety hazard, and minimize flooding in the area.

He is helping American Rivers celebrate the historic dam removal and river restoration project on Washington’s Elwha River. Tom will join Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and other dignitaries at the official dam removal ceremony at Elwha Dam on September 17.

Saving Sierra Nevada Rivers from Misguided Dam Proposals

The South Sutter Water District recently proposed the 350-ft Garden Bar dam on the Bear River approximately 45 miles northeast of Sacramento California. Garden Bar Reservoir would permanently flood approximately 2,500 acres in the lower Bear River, 900 of which are permanently protected public open space.
