Healthy rivers and vibrant cities go together – a Gallup poll reported that people who are more satisfied with their cities are those with access to clean and safe water. Like our work in Milwaukee, using rain gardens, green roofs and other approaches to treat and reuse water on-site creates cleaner water by reducing pollution and sewer overflows, and also improves public health, reduces local flooding and enhances drinking water supplies.

Although most Americans live within a mile of a river or stream, many don’t realize the central role that rivers play in enhancing community quality of life. A healthy river provides plentiful supplies of clean drinking water, thriving fish and wildlife habitat, natural protection from flooding, and abundant recreational opportunities.

This week we celebrated the United States of America’s 236th birthday. Fireworks could be seen in every direction here in the nation’s capital, location of American Rivers’ headquarters. The now celebratory “bombs bursting in air” illuminated beloved Anacostia and Potomac rivers with every color imaginable.

Recently, the Waccamaw River Blue Trail was listed as the priority project for both North and South Carolina as part of the America’s Great Outdoors Rivers Initiative. We are really excited to continue working with all of our great local partners, and now the National Park Service, to promote the blue trail, improve public access and protect riverside land.
