"Green Reserve" - Stimulus Spending at the State Level

March 27, 2009 | Clean Water, Greening Water Infrastructure, Stormwater & Sewage

Katherine Baer
Senior Director, Clean Water Program

Following our big victory in working to get 20% of the stimulus money for clean water and drinking water allocated to green infrastructure and water efficiency, we’re now tracking what’s happening at the state level. First, you should know that in their guidance to the states, the Environmental Protection Agency affectionately (we think…) dubbed the money for green infrastructure and water efficiency the “green reserve” – kind of catchy!

This green reserve money is now being distributed by states.

In Maryland, for example, the demand for the green reserve well outpaced the amount available. Some of the good projects that Maryland is funding include a major water efficiency retrofit program in Baltimore, stream restoration projects, and projects to reduce polluted stormwater runoff.

Many other states are still pulling their green reserve lists together – if you have a green infrastructure or water efficiency project that needs funding, contact your state SRF program to submit an application. If you think that your state isn’t actively looking for green reserve projects or is rejecting them out of hand, check out our SRF stimulus fact sheet for what to do.

As I’ve noted before, this money should leave a legacy of good jobs and cleaner water – I’ll keep you posted as we hear more – leave a comment if you have stimulus stories to share.
