Good news on the Kinnickinnic

It was recently announced by the EPA that dredging of toxic sediments is complete and the Kinnickinnic River is now on the path to restoration.  This is great news and a great success!

American Rivers listed the Kinnickinnic River as one of our 2007 Most Endangered Rivers.  The Kinnickinnic was threatened by toxic sediments with the presence of more than 170,000 cubic yards of toxic sediments laced with PCBs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Fortunately, thanks to the Great Lakes Legacy Act and matching funds from the state of Wisconsin, dredging of toxic sediments started in June 2009 and is now complete.

I encourage everyone in the Milwaukee area to plan a visit to the river; to help celebrate all the great quality of life benefits that a healthy Kinnickinnic River will soon provide.
