Flood the Hill Week! Call your Senators!
Keep communities safe from floods. Call your Senators today: ask them to pass The Flood Insurance Modernization and Reform Act.
At American Rivers we are constantly talking about how climate change will lead to more frequent and intense storms and floods. Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory used measurements of the ocean’s salinity to show that the cycle of evaporation and precipitation has been intensifying over the past half century.
This means that regions that already receive a lot of rain and storms and flooding should expect even more rain and storms and flooding in the future.
So shouldn’t the U.S. Senate want to help homeowners and communities to prepare for more flooding in the future?
There’s a bill in the Senate- S. 1940, the Flood Insurance Modernization and Reform Act- that would make it easier for people who want to move out of flood-prone areas to do so. This is a win for everybody. It moves the homeowners out of harm’s way, it restores the floodplain, and taxpayers don’t have to pay to repair the flooded house again.
The House has already passed a similar bill by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 406-22. But time is running out for the Senate. So we need your help.
This week is “Flood the Hill Week” and we need your help to convince the Senate to hold a vote on this bill. Can you take part by making 2 quick phone calls?
- Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121
- Ask for your Senator's office.
- Tell them “I support S. 1940, the Flood Insurance Modernization and Reform Act. Please have Sen. (your Senator’s name) ask Senator Reid to schedule a vote as soon as possible.”
- Call your other Senator and repeat!
Your Senator needs to hear from you this week and they take calls from their constituents seriously. When you’ve made your calls, leave us a comment below to tell us how it went. Together we can keep our communities safe from floods.
