American Rivers is a cooperating partner in the Water Environment Federation 2010 Urban River Restoration Conference, March 7-10 in Boston.  As there is increasing attention paid to the importance of sustainable practices, and as more people move back to urban areas, this is a great opportunity to learn more about the ways we can restore urban rivers and treat them as valuable assets to our communities.

We will be leading a half-day workshop entitled "A Changing Community Climate for Dam Removal," looking at how dam removal can be a cost-effective solution for urban rivers. Deteriorating, obsolete dams are plaguing many urban streams, impacting the health and quality the river, and creating a financial hardship for communities liable for dam safety and repair. Dam removal can reduce a city’s liability, control localized flooding, improve water quality, attract new business, and improve recreational opportunities.  The workshop will provide important tools on how to take a project from start to finish, and attendees will have the opportunity to discuss their projects with public officials and planners.

Make sure to register soon as American Rivers members can get a discount if they register by February 10th.  The hotel room block deadline is February 22nd.

Additionally, the Water Environment Federation 2010 Cities of the Future conference will occur at the same time allowing for even more discussion and networking opportunities.  Details can be found at www.wef.org/CitiesoftheFuture.
