Calling Your Bid -- CA Stormwater Management Project
November 12, 2009 | Greening Water Infrastructure
With funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the California Clean Water State Revolving Fund, the American Rivers’ California Regional Office will begin groundbreaking on the Yuba Stormwater Management Project in the winter of 2009.
American Rivers’ California Office is looking for a design/build firm to jump start this innovative green infrastructure project.
The Project is aimed at stormwater management in a financially-disadvantaged community within the Yuba Watershed. The project will construct green infrastructure stormwater management facilities to reduce sediment and pollutants in the Yuba River.
Demonstration projects are ready-to-proceed and include: 1) installation of a rain garden, 2) use of a linear, vegetated catchment swale to capture and treat stormwater, 3) curb cuts and a sidewalk grated curb cut to direct stormwater off pavement and on to landscaped sites, and 4) onsite groundwater reuse for irrigation to replace the use of chlorine treated water for irrigation.
The demonstration projects will also include interpretive features to educate the public on the purpose and need for green, low impact, stormwater management.
Located at the Nevada County Eric W. Rood Administrative Center in California, these demonstration projects will serve to exemplify to private land owners and other rural communities the benefits of instituting low impact development to manage stormwater.
Project partners will monitor the impact on flow and water quality, and provide outreach materials to promote this type of “green infrastructure” throughout the Sierra. This project will not only provide jobs in a financially disadvantaged, rural community, but will also increase water quality in a critical headwater river, and promote sustainable, green infrastructure solutions. Above are descriptions of each type of demonstration project. All of these approaches mimic nature’s way of dealing with stormwater and provide not only economic and water quality benefits, but also aesthetic value.
