Boating enthusiasts in the greater Spartanburg, SC area now have access to the Pacolet River, one of the finest paddling rivers in South Carolina, thanks to an operations agreement American Rivers recently helped to negotiate.
Lockhart Power Company, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), and the Fish and Wildlife Service recently signed and agreement which includes provisions that the utility will build safe canoe and kayak landings above and below the project and a portage route for through paddlers. The new access areas will be located in the town of Pacolet Mills and provide a safe takeout for boaters starting their journey on the Lawson’s Fork in Spartanburg.
The agreement also ensures that adequate water will be released downstream of the project for the benefit of fish and wildlife and river based recreation. In a separate agreement with SCDNR, Lockhart Power agreed to protect significant riverside land that will provide wildlife habitat, preserve natural values of the river and keep the water clean.
