10/29: Hurricane Sandy Heading to Shore, Expected to Land Earlier Than Estimated
A strengthened Hurricane Sandy heads toward shore as conditions deteriorate on East Coast. Please check your local weather or tune into the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang live blog for regular updates.
Additional resources to track the hurricane:
- Google's Hurricane #Sandy crisis map, with Red Cross shelters marked
- Get the most up to date weather information through the National Weather Service Visit and click on your location on the map or type in your ZIP code to get your local forecast and watches/warnings.
- Safety should always be the foremost concern. Please stay clear of flooding rivers. Follow FEMA’s tips on what to do before, during, and after a flood.
10/27: Preparing for Hurricane Sandy Flooding
Communities up and down the east coast are bracing for the impact of Hurricane Sandy which could cause massive flooding and other damage.
CNN reports that some spots could see the worst rains in 500 years. You can get the latest advisories from NOAA’s StormCentral.
If you live in the path of the hurricane, take action to protect your home and loved ones. To prepare for a flood, FEMA urges people to prepare an emergency kit and make a family communications plan. The Red Cross has resources on how to keep your home and family safe. And the Humane Society has resources on preparing your pets, too.
American Rivers staff in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast will be watching rivers closely and we’ll be updating this page through the week.
