November is a busy month, with Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, along with continuing river conservation battles and successes. Here’s a quick wrap-up of the month, by the numbers:

1621: Year the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth Colony. Can you name the brook that provided the Pilgrims their vital water supply and herring runs? (the brook that is also becoming a dam removal success story almost 400 years later) Happy Thanksgiving!

5,000: Sources of public drinking water supplies whose protections would be permanently stripped by the Dirty Water Bill

11: Was anybody out there floating Missouri’s Eleven Point River at 11:11 on 11-11-11?

3240: Number of recovering disabled active military service personnel and veterans served by Project Healing Waters, which provides opportunities for participants to learn fly tying and fly fishing.

227: Number of National River Cleanup photo contest entries for 2011.

48 and 32: Feet removed since September from the 108-foot Elwha Dam and the 210-foot Glines Canyon Dam on Washington’s Elwha River. Deconstruction at the dams will pause during November and December – a critical fish migration period – and will resume in January.
