Why is the America’s Most Endangered Rivers List Important?

Within days of last year’s release of our annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers list, we’d already seen some progress.  Due to the advocacy efforts of American Rivers and our supporters, below are some of the actions that took place within the first week after the report’s release:

• In a letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson, Congressman Joseph Sestak (D-PA) highlighted the Upper Delaware listing to emphasize the need for regulation of the natural gas industry.
• Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) expressed support for the listing of the Upper Delaware at a press conference in Narrowsburg, NY.
• Philadelphia City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown, and other local officials, spoke about their support for the Upper Delaware listing at a press conference in Philadelphia, PA.
• American Rivers' Senior Vice President for Conservation received an email from the office of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, expressing their support for the Upper Delaware listing and desire to work collaboratively in the future.
• Iowa Governor Chet Culver and Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett both made positive statements about how the listing of the Cedar River would heighten awareness of the issue and how they are working to address the problem.  The Mayor spoke at a press conference with State Senator Rob Hogg.

America's Most Endangered Rivers is more than a list. It is a call to action to engage concerned citizens in the fight to protect rivers. With public support, we can directly impact the fate of these rivers and save them for generations to come.
