As 2009 draws to a close, we can reflect on one of the most successful years for rivers in recent memory. Thanks to the aid of our supporters, we helped win significant victories for rivers across the country. From cleaner rivers through our National River Cleanup™ program, to permanently protected ones through our Wild and Scenic Rivers victory, we are making a difference.
River successes by the numbers in 2009:
- 1,100 – The number of river miles permanently protected through the historic Wild and Scenic Rivers package signed into law earlier this year.
- 58 – The number of dams removed in 2009. These removals restored rivers to their natural flow so the communities and wildlife that depend on them can thrive.
- 2.3 million – The number of pounds of trash cleaned up from rivers in 47 different states as part of American Rivers’ National River Cleanup™ program.
There are many more numbers that represent our successes in the fight to protect and restore our nation’s rivers, but we need your help. Let’s grow these numbers and continue the progress. And there’s one more number that’s very important:
- 9 – The number of days left to show your support for river protection this year. Please make a special year-end, tax-deductible contribution today.
