5 Ways to Lower Your Water Bill
August 13, 2010 | Clean Water, Greening Water Infrastructure, Water Supply, Water Efficiency
If you live in an area that experiences drought, you’re probably aware of some water conservation techniques you can implement in your home. But are you using them even when water supplies aren’t limited? The best way to ensure enough clean and healthy drinking water is to use what we have smartly. Get tips for saving water around the house, and then take it to the next level by promoting water efficiency in your community.
Here are some quick tips for around the house:
1. Always turn the faucet off in between rinsing dishes, brushing teeth, shaving or washing your face.
2. Only run the dishwasher or clothes washing machine when full (and use cold water when possible.)
3. Think how long you really need your shower to last.
4. Wait for the rains to water your lawn naturally, or replace traditional grass with a vegetable garden or low-maintenance landscaping.
5. Don’t be afraid of a little dirt on your car or bicycle.

Tips 4 & 5 are excellent, as they deal with open evaporative uses of water. The first 3 will lower water bills but do not save water, since they are in a closed loop system. One other tip would be to oppose creation of more man-made lakes designed to cool nuclear power plants. In the scheme of things, turning off the water while brushing teeth is negligible, while lake building and nuclear power plant proliferation are true threats to water quality and quantity.
